Working with students, faculty, and staff, WTW Architects explored numerous options for renovation and expansion of the Sykes Student Union, including the potential for satellite union facilities. The study resulted in a vision that dramatically re-imagines the existing facility program, layout, and facades.
The phasing strategy, which can be implemented over the course of several years in order to minimize the impact on daily operations, focuses attention on student engagement and success, provides for a dramatic facelift to the dining areas, and improves building circulation and efficiency. Particular enhancements favored by students include a new Center for Student Involvement, multicultural and affinity programs, and a meditation space.
Façade and site improvements will add interior daylighting and create a more welcoming, community focused building, making Sykes a beacon of student life.
